Why I'd hand it to you
Jack Weatherford argues that Genghis Khan and his descendants did far more than conquer. They opened trade routes, moved ideas and technology across Asia and Europe, and practiced religious tolerance unusual for the time. Drawing on Mongol sources like The Secret History of the Mongols, he paints a very different figure from the barbarian of popular imagination. It is lively and eye-opening. The caveat is that Weatherford clearly admires his subject, and some historians think he downplays the enormous death toll of the conquests and overstates the Mongol legacy. Read it as a strong case for one side of a real debate.
