Why I'd hand it to you
Ever wonder why Russia keeps pushing west, or why China cares so much about its coastline? Marshall's answer is mountains, rivers, plains and seas. Each chapter takes one region with a map and walks through how the land shapes what its leaders feel they have to do. It is clear and quick, and it makes the evening news easier to follow. Two caveats. Geography isn't the whole story, and at times the book leans on it a little too hard, leaving less room for people, ideas and choices. And world events move fast, so some chapters show their age; look for a newer edition if you can. As a starting point, it is a good one.
