Why I'd hand it to you
Trevor Noah's parents, a Black South African mother and a white European father, broke the law just by having him. That is where the title comes from, and it sets up a memoir that is funny one page and heavy the next. You learn more about how apartheid actually worked from these stories than from many history books. The real center is his mother, a fierce, faith-filled woman who refused to let the rules shrink her son's life. The chapters jump around in time, which can feel loose, and there is some rough language and real violence, especially near the end. For older teens and adults, I'd hand it over without hesitation.
