Why I'd hand it to you
Lori Gottlieb is a therapist who, after a sudden breakup, ends up in therapy herself. She weaves her own sessions together with the stories of several of her patients, including a young newlywed facing cancer and a self-absorbed Hollywood producer. The writing is funny, warm and honest, and it takes much of the mystery out of what happens in a counselor's office. Know that patient details are disguised and combined, so this isn't reporting. Her own storyline can also feel self-focused at times. If you have wondered whether therapy might help you, this is a gentle, encouraging introduction.
