Why I'd hand it to you
Carl Sagan wrote this as a companion to his TV series, and it covers the history of the universe and the history of human discovery side by side, from ancient astronomers to the space age. His writing is warm and full of wonder, and you can feel how much he loved science and wanted others to love it too. Some things to know. It came out in 1980, so some of the science is dated. Sagan also writes from a secular point of view, and his comments on religion will bother some readers. Even so, few writers make the universe feel so inviting.
