Why I'd hand it to you
Robin Wall Kimmerer is a botanist and a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. In these essays she weaves plant science together with Indigenous teachings about gratitude, reciprocity and caring for the land. The writing is slow, careful and often lovely, and it may change how you look at a field or a garden. This one won't suit everyone. It is meditative rather than plot-driven, it can feel long, and Kimmerer's spiritual outlook and critique of modern consumer culture won't sit easily with every reader. Read an essay at a time rather than straight through, and it rewards the patience.
