Why I'd hand it to you
Bryan Stevenson, a lawyer and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, tells stories from his work defending people on death row and others failed by the justice system. At the center is Walter McMillian, a Black man sentenced to death in Alabama for a murder he didn't commit. It is a powerful book about justice and mercy. It is also heavy reading, with stories of wrongful convictions, children sentenced as adults and executions. Some readers will disagree with his views on the death penalty or the justice system broadly. Even so, his case for mercy is hard to dismiss.
