Why I'd hand it to you
Rick Rubin has produced records for everyone from the Beastie Boys to Johnny Cash, so you might expect studio stories. There are almost none. Instead it is a set of short reflections on creativity as a way of paying attention: noticing, staying open, getting out of your own way. In my line of work I see how much of the job is protecting that openness, and that openness is what this book is about. This is not a craft manual. You'll find no techniques or exercises, and the tone is spiritual and abstract, so practical-minded readers may get restless. Read a few pages at a time and it is a good companion for anyone who makes things.
