Why I'd hand it to you
Carl Sagan explains how science works and why careful thinking matters for a free society. He takes on UFO claims, faith healers, witch hunts and fake cures, and offers readers practical tools for spotting bad arguments. He does it with more patience and kindness than most skeptics. The book came out in the 1990s, so some examples feel dated, though the lessons feel more relevant than ever in the age of social media. Readers of faith should know Sagan writes from a secular view and sometimes groups religion with superstition. Even if you disagree there, the thinking tools are worth having.
