Why I'd hand it to you
Michael Gerber explains why so many small businesses struggle: the owner is a skilled technician working in the business rather than on it. He urges owners to build systems that could run without them, as if they were designing a franchise. The story of Sarah, a pie shop owner, makes the ideas concrete. It is useful for anyone who started a business because they were good at the craft. Two cautions, though. The dialogue with Sarah can feel stiff and repetitive, and not every business should be run like a franchise. Creative and relationship-driven work doesn't always fit his model.
