Why I'd hand it to you
C.S. Lewis wrote these as letters from a senior demon, Screwtape, advising his nephew Wormwood on how to lead a young man away from God. Because everything is upside down, the reader has to flip the advice, and in doing so you see how pride, distraction, comfort and small resentments work on ordinary people. It is funny, sharp and convicting. That backwards logic is also the caution: it takes attention, and some readers find the constant reversal tiring or the 1940s British setting distant. Read a letter or two at a time and it gives you a lot to think about.
